AKRON –
After four days of team drills, the University
of Akron football squad
was able to dress in full gear Friday morning in a three-hour session on
Schrank Field.
“The
bullets were live with us being in full gear and we were exposed a little today
as some mistakes showed up that had not previously been prominent wearing just
helmets and shoulder pads,” said head coach J.D. Brookhart. “We had a scrimmage
situation at the end of practice and we to take more advantage of that.
“Our
defense stopped run despite having three of our top four on the sidelines with
injury. Despite that, I really like the way our running backs continue to play
and today’s scrimmage ended with a nice, hard touchdown run by DeVoe Torrence. I
mentioned our depth at receiver yesterday and today was no different. Dashan
Miller has looked good, Andre Jones had a 60-yard touchdown and Alphonso Owen
has had a really good camp so far.”
The Zips
will go twice for the first time Saturday.
On Sunday (Aug.
10), the team will practice one before hosting its annual “Meet the Team” celebration
from 4-6 pm at Rhodes Arena. The event, which is free and open to the public,
will allow fans to interact with each of the 2008 Zips and Coach Brookhart will
address the crowd. There will also be free popcorn, snow cones and cotton
candy, as well as music, inflatables and more.
Also at the
“Meet the Team” celebration, those who have purchased season tickets may pick
up their packages at Rhodes Arena. Otherwise the packages will be put in the
mail on Monday. If you have not purchased your tickets for the 2008 and ’09
seasons, members of the ticket office will be on hand to serve you.
The Team
Shop will additionally be open Sunday during the “Meet the Team” celebration
where fans can purchase latest Zips’ gear and 2008 media guides.
