| Shelby Johnson Gets NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship | ||||||||||

AKRON - University of Akron senior Shelby Johnson, a member of the Zips' track & field team, was one of 26 nationally to be recipient of the 2010-11 Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarships for Careers in Athletics. Akron also had senior swimmer Madelyn Robinson be one of the 26 selected for the scholarship. Johnson (Gahanna, Ohio/Westerville North HS) has a 3.8 cumulative grade point average and is majoring in athletic coaching and education. He has decided to pursue his Master's at the University of Central Florida thanks to this opportunity. He will do his post-graduate work in the University's sports leadership and coaching program. Johnson also plans on being a volunteer assistant with the UCF track program while working with former UA staffer Eric Coleman in the athletics academic advising department. "This is a great opportunity and I am pleased the committee selected me," Johnson said. "However, I am more excited this program allows for minorities and women the opportunity to get their feet in the door in athletics and put them in a position to be a part of athletics in the future." The NCAA annually awards 13 scholarships to ethnic minorities and 13 scholarships to female college graduates who will be entering their initial year of postgraduate studies. Recipients must be seeking admission or have been accepted into a sports administration or related program that will help them obtain a career in intercollegiate athletics. Scholarship winners have one year to use the one-time award of $6,000. The scholarship programs were developed by the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics and the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee with the goal of increasing the pool of and opportunities for qualified minority and female candidates in intercollegiate athletics.
