The Opening Tip
Following a nine-day break from competition, the University of Akron women's basketball team will welcome Lake Erie College to Rhodes Arena Monday at 7 p.m.

About Lake Erie College
The Storm are off to their best start in school history with a 7-4 record entering play Monday. The Division II program is coming off an 85-73 victory over Slippery Rock last Saturday afternoon and come to Akron having won four straight games.

Lake Erie returned all five starters and 11 letterwinners from a team that went 6-21 a year ago. The Storm features four double-digit scorers, led by Alyssa Wagers, who averages 13.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per contest.

The Last Time Out
Despite a 14-point halftime lead, Akron needed 11 second-half points from Kara Murphy and nine from Rachel Tecca to lead the Zips to a 75-63 victory over Youngstown State Saturday afternoon at Rhodes Arena.

Murphy, who scored seven of Akron's final 12 points, led the Zips (4-4) with 16 points, adding six rebounds, while Tecca finished with 13 points and six boards as well.

Four minutes into the second half, YSU (0-8) had back-to-back, fast-break layups from Brandi Brown, who led all scorers with 24 points, and Kenya Middlebrooks to trim its deficit to eight, 44-36, but that is as close at the Penguins would get. The Zips answered with a Tecca layup, two free throws by Murphy and an Ayla Guzzardo jumper.

Brown sank 10-of-17 shots and posted a double-double, getting a game-high 14 rebounds.

With Akron up 17 with just under five to play, Youngstown used a 12-5 run, including eight straight, over the next four minutes to once again trail by eight, 71-63. Murphy broke the dry spell by sinking two free throws. Guzzardo added two more from the charity stripe with 27 seconds left to provide the 75-63 margin.

Murphy Movin' On Up
With 1,164 career points, junior Kara Murphy currently sits in fifth place on the school's all-time scoring list and trails Diane Hollish, who scored  1,195 points from 1984-88, by 32 points. Murphy, who began the season in 10th place on the prestigious list, has led the Zips in scoring six times in eight games this season and 41 times in 69 games (59.4 percent) for her career.

Cheryl Bowles is the school's all-time scoring leader with 1,712 points in 115 games from 1997-01.
