WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The 16th-ranked University of Akron men’s soccer team lost 3-1 to top-ranked Wake Forest on Friday at Spry Stadium as part of the Wake Forest Tournament.
Akron (2-1-0) scored its lone goal in the game’s second minute during a corner kick opportunity. Ben Zemanski (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) was credited with the goal and Anthony Ampaipitakwong (Carrollton, Texas/IMG[Fla.] Academy) the assist with 1:29 on the clock. Wake Forest (3-0-0) evened things up at 14:40, then found the net again in the 56th minute and again in the 73rd minute to put the Zips away. “I’m very pleased with the way our team played tonight,” UA head coach Caleb Porter said. “We were able to control the ball for portions of the game, but Wake Forest took advantage of a couple of restarts and some of our mistakes. We will now get some rest and regroup for North Carolina on Sunday.” While Wake Forest was credited with nine total shots compared to six by Akron, both teams tallied four shots on goal apiece. The Zips will stay in Winston-Salem to face North Carolina on Sunday at noon in the final day of the Wake Forest Tournament. |
