UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 2 University of Akron men’s soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to 12 games as it played Penn State to a 1-1, double overtime tie Wednesday night at Jeffrey Field.
With the draw, the Zips (13-1-3) saw their 10-game win streak and run of five consecutive shutouts come to an end.
"Sometimes winning hides things and we have been slipping in areas without being punished for them," said third-year head coach Caleb Porter. "The game is honest and eventually it will catch up with you like it did for us tonight."
For the first time in more than a month, the Zips were shut out in the first half as the action was tight early on. The Nittany Lions (4-9-3) out-shot UA, 9-8, in the opening period as the teams played to a scoreless tie at the break.
Freshman Teal Bunbury broke the deadlock early in the second half with an unassisted goal coming in the 50th minute. It was his second goal in as many games and his sixth score on the year overall.
Akron held on to the narrow margin until the 79th minute when Mark Fetrow found the back of the net for his first goal of the season off a feed from Jacobo Vera.
UA freshman Darlington Nagbe had one last shot before the end of regulation, but his shot in the 86th minute was blocked and the Zips found themselves in their fourth overtime game of the year and second in three games against a team from the Big Ten Conference.
Akron dominated PSU in the extra periods, out-shooting PSU 3-0 in the first overtime stanza and 3-1 in the second but couldn’t find the net. Penn State keeper Warren Gross, who finished with six saves for the game, made a pair of saves in overtime to hold off the Zips.
Senior Evan Bush logged all 110 minutes between the pipes and recorded four saves.
"This might have been the best thing to have happened to us," Porter said. "Now, hopefully we will make some corrections. The nice thing is that we got to learn our lesson without losing tonight. Also, the timing is good. We will refocus and make some adjustments before we head into postseason play."
The Zips will next head to Hartwick Saturday for their final Mid-American Conference game of the year. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. (EST).
"I know the players will be motivated to have a good performance against Hartwick and show that they are better than they looked tonight," Porter said.
