AKRON, Ohio -
Behind dominant pitching and timely hitting the Gold team defeated the
Blue squad, 2-0 in game three of the Blue-Gold Fall World Series at Lee Jackson
Field this afternoon. The win keeps the best-of-five series alive with Blue
leading, 2-1.
Sophomore Scott Foster recorded the win for Gold, surrendering just three hits and striking out two in five innings of work. Sophomore Chris Bassitt took the hill in relief and pitched two shutout innings, striking out three while allowing just one hit to register the save. The freshman class came up big for the gold squad as Brady Stewart and Samuel Trecaso tallied a respective RBI-double and RBI-single for the only offensive output on the day. Senior Nick Solitario also freshman Tyler Begun also doubled in today's contest. Freshman Jared Turocy was saddled with the loss after allowing two earned runs on four scattered hits with a strikeout. Sophomore Transfer Sam Watkins also saw time on the bump, tossing a scoreless inning while recording a strikeout. Three and a half shutout innings gave way to a two-run fourth for the Gold squad. Gold launched their first threat of the afternoon when Kordal led off the frame with the first of two walks on the day. Begun doubled to the gap in left center and Kordal chugged home from first but was gunned down at the plate by a solid defensive play by junior Jake Plata. The next play saw Stewart double to left field, scoring Begun from second. With two away, a timely single from Trecaso plated Stewart to give the Gold squad a 2-0 advantage. After surrendering a single to Plata to open the sixth, Bassitt settled in, retiring six straight batters to close out the game. The red-hot Blue offense which manufactured 19 hits and 18 runs in the first two games of the series was held scoreless this afternoon. A pair of juniors led the Blue offense as Kyle Hallett and Plata both went 2-for-3 to tally the team's four hits in today's game. The Blue squad had opportunities to score but stranded five runners in today's loss. The series resumes tomorrow afternoon (Friday, Oct. 9th) at Lee Jackson Field with first pitch slated for approximately 2:15 pm. Saturday's (if necessary) game is slated for a 9:30 am start. |
