AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's soccer team ran its win streak to six games and shut out its fifth-straight opponent on Thursday when it defeated visiting Ohio 1-0 at Lee Jackson Field in the regular-season finale for both squads.
The Zips (9-6-2, 7-3-1 MAC) scored the lone goal of the contest during the 41st minute of play. Junior Kyra Petrole sent in a corner kick from the left side and freshman Katie Wise was able to tap the ball by Bobcats (9-7-2, 6-3-2 MAC) goalkeeper Jess McClean at the 40:47 mark. Wise notched the third goal and third game-winning score of her rookie season, while Petrole earned her second assist of the year and third of her career to lead an Akron attack that outshot Ohio, 13-5. The Bobcats held a 5-4 edge in the shots on goal category and both teams took four corner kicks. UA sophomore goalkeeper Jeny Wolbert picked up her eighth win of the season and sixth shutout. The reigning MAC co-defensive player of the week had five saves in 90 minutes of work. The Zips have now outscored their last five opponents by an 8-0 margin and finished league play with a program-best seven wins. Akron finished in a second-place tie with Eastern Michigan in the regular-season standings and due to tie-breaker procedures the Zips are the third seed in the MAC Tournament, which begins on Sunday at campus sites. The top-eight teams in the standings qualify for the event, with the top-four hosting first round matches. Akron, which is competing in the event for the first time in the program's nine-year history, will play host to sixth-seeded Miami (Ohio) on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET. The Zips defeated the RedHawks 1-0 on Oct. 16 at Lee Jackson Field. After the quarterfinal round, the highest-remaining seed plays host to the semifinals and championship on Nov. 6 and 8, respectively. Central Michigan finished the year as the top seed. "I told the team to enjoy their journey in the MAC Tournament," Pfau said. "You don't know when you might have this opportunity again, so play like it is your last and enjoy the ride. You need to win three games and at this point in the season anything can happen." |
