OXFORD, Ohio - The UA swimming and diving team visited Miami (Ohio) this afternoon for their second meet in as many days. Despite several strong swims, Akron (0-2, 0-2 MAC) could not thwart off the defending Mid-American Conference champion Redhawks as the Zips fell, 187-111 in the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.

UA Senior Stephanie Zielinski led the Zips this afternoon, picking up a pair of victories by claiming the top spot in both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle races today. Zielinski tapped in with a 24.28 timestamp in the 50-yard free before finishing first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.60.

Fellow senior Cathryn Collins also turned in a strong performance, recording a win in the 500-yard freestyle (5:04.77) while taking second place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.09) today.

Senior Kendall Karchner added a 1-2 finish on the day, taking first place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:03.60, also finishing second in the 100-yard backstroke with a 57.16 timestamp.

Senior Julia Gregos turned in another solid day in the pool, taking third place to pace the Zips in the 1650-yard freestyle race, swimming in a time of 17:40.40.


Akron freshmen continued to excel as Kelsea Cross recorded a pair of third place finishes, tapping in at third in the 100-yard butterfly (58.62) as well as the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.58). Katie Miles took third place in the 100-yard butterfly race with a 58.62 timestamp while Rebecca Zimmer also registered a third place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.17).

Sophomore Leeanna Hoover led the Zips from both boards for the second time this season, taking third place from the 3-meter board (235.57) while finishing fourth from the 1-meter springboard.

The UA relay teams faired well on the day as Akron opened the meet by capturing second and third place in the 400-yard medley relay. The "A" team, including Karchner, freshman Rachel Szymkowiak, Collins and Zielinski tapped into second with a 3:57.36 timestamp. Cross, junior Julie Reynolds, Miles and sophomore Meg Finnerty collaborated on the third place finish in a time of 3:58.10.

The 200-yard freestyle relay saw the Zips finish 1-2 as Akron's "A" team, including Zielinski, sophomore Jessica Ickes, Finnerty and Miles tapped in with a time of 1:36.86. The "B" team would follow as Gregos, junior Brigid Wolf, senior Melissa Gary and Collins combined for the time of 1:41.26.

The Zips continue Mid-American Conference competition next week, opening play at home as the Zips welcome Ball State and Eastern Michigan to Ocasek Natatorium. The Zips will take on Ball State Friday, Nov. 6 at 5:00 p.m. before hosting the EMU Eagles on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 12 p.m.
