AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's soccer team closed out its season on Sunday with a 2-0 loss to Miami (Ohio) in quarterfinal round play in the Mid-American Conference Tournament at Lee Jackson Field. The third-seeded Zips finished their campaign with a 9-7-2 overall record, while the sixth-seeded RedHawks improved to 11-7-1 and advance to face off against second-seeded Eastern Michigan in Friday's semifinal round. EMU defeated seventh-seeded Kent State 3-0 on Sunday. After playing to a scoreless first half, Miami found the net in the opening minute of the second period, when Sara Lund went one-on-one with UA sophomore goalkeeper Jeny Wolbert and struck from about 15 yards out. The RedHawks' other score came in the 73rd minute, when Stephanie Laser headed in a free kick ball from Allison Berkey. Six separate Akron players were credited with shots, while senior Kate Ferrara and junior Kyra Petrole accounted for the squad's two shots on goal. Miami had 14 shots, seven of which came on goal. Wolbert finished with four saves in 90 minutes of play and the UA defense was credited with one team save. Sunday's loss brought Akron's six-match win streak and five-game shutout streak to an end, and until Miami's early second-half score the Zips' defense had held its opponents scoreless for 531 consecutive minutes – dating back to a second-half goal by Toledo on Oct. 6. In its ninth year as a varsity sport, Akron was a qualifier for the MAC Tournament for the first-time ever this season. The Zips finished the regular season in a second-place tie with Eastern Michigan and due to tie-breaker procedures were awarded the third seed and likewise one of four quarterfinal home games. UA finished league play with a 7-3-1 record, with those seven victories being a program best. "We had an incredible run and it was a fun season," second-year Akron head coach Chris Pfau said. "Our team chemistry came together at just the right time and you could see that in the results. Also, I can't thank the senior class enough. Each class wants to go through its time here and say it made the program better. This year's group of seniors can definitely say that. We did many things this year that hadn't ever been done by the program." |
