The Opening Tip
The University of Akron women's basketball team will continue its five-game road trip at Robert Morris Thursday at 7 p.m. Live stats for the game will be available at www.rmucolonials.com.com.
Road Warriors
The Zips are on the second leg of a five-game road swing after playing at St. Bonaventure last Sunday. In fact, UA has just four home games from Nov. 15 to Jan. 9 and will play nine of 13 contests on the road during that time.
Moreover, with trips as far east as New York, as far south as Florida and as far west as Illinois, Akron will seeming span much of the midwest and beyond. The Zips were 2-12 in road games and 1-1 at neutral sites last season.
About Robert Morris
Robert Morris (0-1) is coming off a tough 62-57 season-opening loss to Kent State last Friday night. The Colonials held a 52-40 lead with 5:25 left in regulation but couldn't hold on as the Golden Flashes rallied for the victory in the Charles L. Sewall Center Friday night.
RMU returns five players and just one starter from last year's squad that posted an overall record of 13-18, including a 9-9 mark in NEC play a year ago. The Colonials were picked to finish fourth this year among the 12-team league.
Senior guard Angela Pace led Robert Morris with 13 points, seven rebounds and eight assists against KSU.
Last Year vs. The Colonials
Kara Murphy led four players in double figures as the Zips pulled out an 82-75 victory over Robert Morris in the teams' last meeting at Rhodes Arena.
Murphy paced Akron with 21 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Amber Witt added 17 points - behind a trio of triples - in UA's highest offensive output of the year. Sade Logan led all scorers with 22 points, though just six came after halftime, for the visiting Colonials.
Akron connected on 48.5 percent (27-for-63) of its field goal attempts, including 47.4 percent (9-for-19) from 3-point distance. The team's 82 points represented its highest-scoring game since matching that mark in a win at Niagara in 2007.
Joining Murphy and Witt in double figures were junior Victoria Arndt, who recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Ashley Veal, who struck for 12 points, three rebounds and recorded a key block late in the game.
With Akron leading 76-73 and less than a minute left, Veal rejected a Kendra Williams lay-up attempt to give the ball back to the Zips. Murphy followed by nailing a pair of free throws to ice the game for the Zips, who trailed 40-39 at the half.
The Last Time Out
Akron struggled offensively and St. Bonaventure opened the second half on an 11-0 run as the Zips suffered a 67-37 loss on the road to the Bonnies Sunday.
The Bonnies' Dana Mitchell did most of the damage during the run and she finished with a game-high 16 points. She was joined in double figures by Megan Van Tatenhove and Amelia Horton, each with 11.
Akron got a pair of free throws from Rachel Tecca and a 3-pointer from Katie Bubna to cut the UA deficit to 19 before the Bonnies hit three treys to pull away for the win.
The Zips were led in scoring by Kara Murphy and Tecca, each with six.
St. Bonaventure grabbed the early lead and never relinquished it. However, the Zips kept within striking distance over the first 20 minutes despite 12 first-half turnovers. Akron held the Bonnies scoreless over the final 1:56 and trimmed a 13-point deficit to seven, 27-20, at the break, thanks to a layup by Jolene Tamboue as time expired.
But SBU came out of the locker room firing and never looked back. For the game, St. Bonaventure shot 51 percent from the floor, while holding the Zips to 30.7 percent shooting.
Murphy Continues Ascent
Though it was far from her typical performance, Murphy moved into seventh place on the school's all-time scoring list following her six-point effort at St. Bonaventure Sunday. With 1,049 career points, the third-year forward needs just eight more to pass Abby Hoy (1,056) for sixth on the list.
