Farmingdale, N.Y. – After two rounds of the McLaughlin Tournament the University of Akron golf team rests in first place after carding in 559 (273-286) strokes on day one of the event.
All of the Zips participants are currently in the top-20 with senior Blake Sattler leading the entire field with a mark of 136 (65-71) strokes. The New Philadelphia, Ohio native posted the best round of the tournament with a five-under par-65 in round one and finished just one over par in round two.
Coming off of a career-best eighth-place finish at the Wolverine Intercollegiate last weekend, sophomore Brad Wright (Cambridge, Ohio/Cambridge HS) picked up right where he left off tallying 139 (67-72) strokes, ending the day tied for sixth place.
Junior Ryan Gutowski (Copley, Ohio/Copley HS) posted a first-round score of 71 and followed with a even par-70 in round two to finish day one in 12th place. Senior Ryan Culbertson (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster HS) wasn’t far behind as he completed the first 18 holes at even par and tallied a three-over par-73 the second time through the course to rest tied in 15th place.
Sophomore Vaughn Snyder (Massillon, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) completed the quintet of Zips in the top-20 as he tallied 144 (71-73) strokes to end the day tied for 19th place.
Akron will look to hold off the 16-team field when it takes to the 6,602 yard Red Course at Bethpage tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. EDT.
