AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron football team, under the direction of fourth-year head coach J.D. Brookhart, had its first of 15 spring practices in preparation for the 2007 season Thursday afternoon, going just over two hours in helmets only on Schrank Field.

The practice was up-tempo, reflecting upon the Zips’ offense, which will compliment a more mobile quarterback, compliment Akron’s depth among running backs and compliment Akron’s offensive line, which Brookhart has described as more athletic. The fast-paced offense allowed for more snaps, which both the players and coaches noted how much more was accomplished today compared to practices in the past.

“There was great spirit and enthusiasm,” Brookhart said. “The pace of practice was outstanding and there was some urgency out there. It is frustrating not being able to wear full pads and not have contact. It is hard for the players to have good technique and it is difficult to play fast. Overall, it was fun. If we have 14 more of these type practices, I will be happy.”

Although the Zips do not have 11 starters from last year’s team this spring, including a kicker and long snapper, the squad only lost a total of 14 lettermen, meaning 46 players are back with experience. That being said, of those 14 lettermen not back, the Zips lost their starting quarterback, four starting offensive linemen and two of their three starting defensive lineman.

“On offense today, the youth of the offensive line and quarterback positions showed up,” Brookhart said. “Also, we are a little banged up at wide receiver. However, I was pleased with our running backs and I believe (the offense) will make a lot of strides over the next two weeks.”

The Akron defense, namely the linebackers and secondary, is the team’s strong suit as spring ball starts. The unit returns its top six tacklers (John Mackey, Kevin Grant, Brion Stokes, Andre Jones and Davanzo Tate) and returns two players, Reggie Corner and Parris McNeal, who earned a fifth year from the NCAA as the pair are on pace to graduate within the year.

“The defense is far ahead of the offense right now,” Brookhart said. “They were making checks today that we have not even installed yet.”

In addition to team and individual drills, throughout the practice, the team would come together to work on special teams, which Brookhart has shifted his focus to and will coordinate.

The Zips will reconvene Friday for its second practice session, also wearing just helmets.

Akron will hold its annual spring game on April 15 (Sunday) at 4 pm in the Athletics Field House. Prior to the game, the Zip baseball team will host Central Michigan at 1 pm. All the events of the day – presented by Sky Bank – will be released as details are solidified.
