PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The
Akron-Duquesne baseball game has been suspended on account of heavy rain in
the Pittsburgh area today and will resume on April 22nd at Lee Jackson Field when the Zips are slated to host Duquesne. The Zips managed to squeeze three and a half innings in this afternoon before the game was called on account of weather. With play suspended in the middle of the fourth, the Zips and Duquesne remain knotted at 1-1.
Akron opened the contest scoring first this afternoon in the top of the third as Kevin Haas earned a free base after being hit by a pitch. Haas then moved over to second on a wild pitch before senior centerfielder Matt Roberts hit a single to center, plating Haas to put the Zips up 1-0.
In the bottom of the third, Duquesne responded, scoring one run-unearned to tie
the game 1-1.
Freshman righty Alex Loftin earned his first collegiate start this afternoon and until the heavy downpour arrived, made the most of it, working effectively from the mound. In three innings pitched, the freshman has allowed just one hit and fanned five out of ten batters faced.
Akron batted in the top of the fourth before the umpires postponed play, awaiting a change in the weather. An
hour later, the decision to postpone the game was made.
The Zips and Dukes will conclude today's game on Wednesday, April 22 at Lee Jackson Field before the regular scheduled 3 pm contest between the two teams takes place.
Please note that since poor weather and field conditions at Duquesne did not permit a radio broadcast this afternoon, the Zips' first game against Toledo on Friday, Mar. 27 at 3 pm will be broadcast on Sports Radio 1350 instead. Additionally, Saturday and Sunday's games will be available on the Akron ISP Sports Network with a subscription to Zips Zone on www.GoZips.com. Live stats will be available for all three games at www.GoZips.com.
