LAKE WORTH, Fla. –PennState used a triple in the first and a
home run in the second to jump out to a big lead and hold on for a 10-4 victory
over Akron
Saturday night at the Palm Beach Challenge. Akron
will conclude its play in the Palm Beach Challenge Sunday, facing Pittsburgh. Game time has been moved up 30 minutes to a
10 am first pitch due to Akron’s
travel schedule.
PennState (3-5) jumped out to an early 4-0
lead in the first. After a leadoff walk and hit batter, Mike Deese delivered an
RBI single. Two batters later, Jordan Steranka ripped a two-run triple to
right. An error on what should have been the third out allowed Steranka to
score.
Grant
Youngblood did more damage in the second, hitting a three-run home run for a
7-0 PSU lead. In the fourth, Deese drove in his second run of the game with a
sacrifice fly to right, making the score 8-0.
Despite the
rocky start, UA starter Andrew Brown (0-1) settled down to strikeout seven with
just the two walks over five complete. The freshman allowed eight hits and
eight runs (seven earned). PSU starter T.J. Macy (1-1) also pitched five
innings, fanning nine and allowing just two hits and two walks.
Akron got on the board in the sixth. Matt Roberts drew a leadoff walk, Jake Plata was hit by a pitch and Kyle Hallett hit
a bloop-single to load the bases. A wild pitch brought Roberts home and Plata
scored on a Ryan Frazee sacrifice fly. Brett Savage kept the rally going with
an RBI single, making the score 8-3.
The Zips
kept the momentum rolling in the seventh as John Turk had a leadoff home run,
his first of the season, trimming the deficit to four (8-4).
PennState got the run back in the home half
as pinch hitter Joey DeBernardis hit a one-out home run to center. The Lions
padded their advantage with a run in the eighth. Landon Nakata had a leadoff
single, moved to second on a balk and advanced to third on a ground out.Ryan Boonie capped the PSU scoring with an RBI
single.
Roberts and
Hallett led the UA offense, each with two hits.
