AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron freshman center Zeke Marshall scored 10 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to overcome a late second-half surge by Austin Peay and the Zips fell to the Governors 80-77 on Sunday afternoon at Rhodes Arena in the first round of the Glenn Wilkes Classic.
Austin Peay (1-1) trailed 74-62 with 5:26 remaining, before scoring 17-straight points capped by a Duran Roberson free throw with eight seconds to play. Akron (0-1) built its lead to as much as 72-57 with 7:36 to go, but went 1-for-8 from the field over the remainder of the contest.
The Zips, who led 44-32 at halftime, shot 30.3 percent (10-of-33) in the second half en route to losing their first home opener since a 78-68 defeat to 25th-ranked Western Kentucky on Dec. 5, 2001. UA shot 40.9 percent (27-of-66) from the floor for the game and made 15-of-25 free throws (60 percent). The Governors, who rebounded from a season-opening loss at top-10 ranked Tennessee on Friday night, shot 50 percent (27-of-54) for the game.
Marshall was one of four UA players to finish in double-figure points, with Steve McNees scoring 14, Anthony "Humpty" Hitchens adding 12 and Chris McKnight pitching in 11. Marshall also tallied two blocked shots in 24 minutes off the bench. McNees went 6-for-6 from the line and had two steals, Hitchens made 4-of-7 3-pointers and had a team-high four assists, while McKnight had five boards.
APSU's Wesley Channels led all players with 17 points and Tyrone Caldwell added 14 as two of four Governor players to score double-digit points. Anthony Campbell finished with 14 points, 13 in the second half, and Roberson scored all 12 of his in the second frame. Campbell and Roberson didn't attempt a field goal in the first half, but combined to go 8-for-13 in the second period.
Akron continues competition in the Glenn Wilkes Classic on Nov. 20-22 at Ocean Center Arena in Daytona Beach, Fla., facing NC State, Drake and Howard, respectively.
