Akron, Ohio – Senior center Isaiah Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio) been tabbed the Zips' Student-Athlete of the Month, presented by The University of Akron, for January 2017.
Johnson led the Akron Zips men’s basketball team to a perfect 9-0 record in the month of January while surpassing a career milestone while posting two double-doubles.
On Jan. 10, Johnson recorded a career-high 33 points against Central Michigan and became the 42nd member of the Zips’ 1,000 Point Club.
During the month, Johnson averaged a team-high 18.8 points per game while scoring double-digits in 8-of-9 contests and leading the Zips’ scoring in 3-of-9 games.
Johnson also led Akron on the glass, pulling down 8.3 rebounds per game that included 49 defensive boards and 26 offensive grabs for a total of 75 rebounds. N addition, Johnson added 3.1 assists (28) per game with six blocked shots and five steals.
During the run, Akron built a 12-game winning streak and extended its MAC regular-season game winning streak to 12 games. Both runs are the second longest in head coach Keith Dambrot’s tenure. Furthermore, the Zips received votes in the AP Top 25 and USA Today Coaches’ Poll while moving to No. 7 on the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll.
For the Month, Johnson shot 60.4 percent from the floor, connecting with 61-of-101 field goals and a 48-of-87 effort from the charity stripe. He opened the month with back-to-back games of 16 points before posting the career-best 33 points and eclipsing the 1,000 point threshold. At Miami, Johnson only scored eight points, but followed with games of 15, 21, 13, 27, and 21 to end the month.
