Zippy's Top 10: Top Three Fan Memories
Good Afternoon Zips Fans!
For the last two-and-a-half weeks, I have been telling you about my favorite moments of the 2010-11 season.
From Academic All-America honors to conference titles, a national championship to record-breaking careers, the past season was one of the most exciting – if not THE most exciting – in the history of Akron Athletics.
At the beginning of the month, I asked all of Zips Nation to submit its favorite moments of the past year. As I went through my top 10, I began to review your submissions as to your favorite moments. There were a lot of good stories to go through and I enjoyed reading them all.
Now it's your turn Zips Fans! After reading through all of the submissions, I have picked my top-three stories (in no particular order). If your story is featured, you will receive an e-mail asking for your contact information to claim your prize.
Peter – Going to Quicken Loans Arena to Watch the Zips Beat Kent State for the MAC Title
My favorite moment was being alongside many Akron Zips fans in Cleveland, Ohio, as we stood watching the closing seconds of the MAC Tournament. With seven seconds left on the clock, Zeke Marshall made the first block as Kent State tried to put up a potential game winning layup. Then with two seconds left in the game, Steve McNees blocked a desperate Kent State 3-point try, sending the Akron Zips to the NCAA Tournament! It was all dancing from there. You cannot write a better script for The University of Akron Zips Men's Basketball team!
Adam – Traveling to California for the College Cup and Watching the Men's Soccer Team Win a National Title
My favorite Zips memory for this year is a combination of all the men's soccer tournament games and the subsequent College Cup trip I took with my father. The two memories that stick out the most are the final game at Lee Jackson Field, standing on the ropes near our bench while it snowed and watching the penalty kicks and celebrating with my dad, a long-time soccer fan and player as well as former Akron student. My father played alongside Nanchoff's father when he played, so it's cool to have a slight connection to the team in a round about way. That game in the snowfall, and celebrating the College Cup appearance was fantastic, but nothing compared to the amazing games in Santa Barbara. Taking a trip with my father and having some long overdue father-son time was unbelievable and much needed. Being next to my dad and screaming in celebration as we counted down the minutes and seconds until the win against Louisville was priceless. I owe a big thanks to the Akron Zips and their beautiful skills and ability to make a dream season end in a championship for my father and I.
Nick – Joining a Group of Friends at the Barley House to Watch Akron Soccer Win the National Championship
My favorite moment last season was watching the men's soccer team win the national title. Myself, and a group of friends, went to every home soccer match last season. We were there for the MAC Tournament and were able to make it to every home match of the NCAA Tournament. When the Zips made it to the finals, we were so excited. We went to the Barley House early to make sure we could get a table. There were so many people there it was unbelievable. When Scott Caldwell put the ball into the back of the net, you could feel the excitement. I will always remember that moment and I cannot wait for 2011 so I can watch the Zips win it all again!
Thanks for all your submissions. I can hardly wait for the 2011-12 season to start. I look forward to seeing all of you at all of the great Akron Athletics events this year.
Go Zips!
