AKRON, Ohio – Fueled by the men's soccer team's
historic national championship run, The University of Akron
finished 15th among all Division I men's athletics programs
competing nationally for the 2010-11 Capital One Cup.
The Capital One Cup is awarded annually to each of the top men's and women's Division I college athletics programs in the country. Points toward the Capital One Cup were earned and tracked throughout the year based on final standings of NCAA Division I Championships and final official coaches' polls.
With 40 points, the Zips were the only Mid-American Conference school ranked in the top 50 and one of just two members to earn points overall (the Miami RedHawks finished 68th with three points). In all, UA finished 12 points behind Ohio State, which finished 10th with 52 points.
Florida won the men's Capital One Cup with a total of 93 points
while Stanford claimed the women's crown with 121 points. Sports were grouped based on fan interest,
school participation and other factors. Schools earned points for a
top-ten finish in NCAA Championships and final official coaches' polls.
Launched in the fall of 2010, the Capital One Cup honors
NCAA Division I athletics programs for their cumulative on-field
performance across multiple men’s and women’s sports.
