Zippy's Top 10: Year in Roo-View Countdown Begins Monday
Hey Zips fans,
It's your favorite marsupial mascot, Zippy!
Starting next Monday (July 11) and continuing throughout the month, The University of Akron Department of Athletics and I will reflect on what was arguably the greatest season in UA history in a special series called "Zippy's Top 10: Year in Roo-View" on GoZips.com.
I've compiled what I believe to be the top 10 UA accomplishments – both individual and team oriented – from the 2010-11 season and will reveal one per day (Monday through Friday) beginning with No. 10 and counting all the way down to No. 1.
To be honest, compiling the top 10 was not an easy task and
ranking them was even more difficult. But in the grand scheme of
things, that's a good problem to have!
To simplify things, I started by limiting each sport to just one
entry. Then, I compared the relative significance of each storyline
not only to the rest of the field, but also relative to each
individual program's history.
While 10 different Zips' fans may come up with 10 different top-10 lists, no one can debate the collective success exemplified by the Blue and Gold in 2010-11.
We all know the story of how the men's soccer team captured the school's first team national championship in any sport last December but did you also know that of UA's 19 intercollegiate varsity programs, five – or more than a quarter – were 2010-11 Mid-American Conference champions? Moreover, four UA teams were represented at NCAA Championships and a total of nine Zips were drafted into the professional ranks of their sport.
That's just a few of the many storylines that will be featured over the course of the month. But by no means is my top 10 list the be-all-end-all of Zips' athletics. Instead, it is a reference point to remember all that was great about 2010-11. That being said, whether you agree with it or disagree with it – enjoy it. I sure did and hope you do too.
But – to quote your favorite late-night infomercial – that's not all! While I present my top stories from the past year, I want to hear yours as well.
Where were you when men's soccer midfielder Scott Caldwell went top shelf to sink Louisville in the NCAA Championship game? How did you celebrate? Where you in Santa Barbara? How did you get there? Did you watch at home with a group of friends?
What was it like when you watched Zeke Marshall swat Kent State's Rodriquez Sherman in the final seconds of overtime to seal another MAC Tournament Championship for the men's basketball team and punch the Zips' ticket back to the Big Dance?
Tell me your best story from a fans' perspective by clicking on the blue button below. The best user-submitted stories will be posted on GoZips.com at the end of the month. All fans who have their stories posted will win a UA Athletics prize.
