AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men’s and women’s soccer programs have each earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for the 2011-12 academic year. UA was one of 152 institutions from across the nation that had both its men’s and women’s programs honored.
Teams that maintained a grade point average 3.0 or higher during the academic year were honored with the award. Vernon Croft’s women’s team posted a team GPA of 3.31 while Caleb Porter’s men’s squad made the cut with a team GPA of 3.23. A total of 726 college soccer teams (222 men, 504 women) were recognized by the NSCAA.
The Zips were one of three programs from the Mid-American Conference, along with Bowling Green and Western Michigan, that had both their men’s and women’s teams receive the award.
It marks the fifth consecutive year that the Akron men have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award and sixth time overall in program history, as the Zips first earned the award in 2001. The UA women garnered the honor for the second straight year as well.
