AKRON, Ohio – Redshirt junior Raechel Eck (Sterling Heights, Mich.) scored her first goal of the season and first in two years in the 33' of the match, as the Akron women's soccer team takes down Miami 1-0 at FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field on Thursday night.
Â
Akron registered six shots in the contest against the Redhawks with Eck and freshman Abigail Brown (Batavia, Ohio) each posted two shots, while sophomore Ashley Amato (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and freshman Angela Boyce (Farmington Hills, Mich.) both added a shot, respectively.
Â
Earning the win in the net for the Zips was freshman Amani Jiu (Brooklyn, N.Y.). The Zips goalkeeper picked up her second win of the year, along with her third clean sheet after making two saves in the game.
Â
After battling through injuries the previous two and a half seasons, Eck saw a significant amount of playing time for the first time this season against Miami. After subbing in 26' of the match, Eck made an immediate impact putting the Zips ahead 1-0 with her first goal in over two years. Ally Brown (Batavia, Ohio) earned her fourth assist on the year after sending a cross pass into the box to Eck to set up the goal.
Â
Amato recorded the first shot attempt of the evening in the 19' with a strike just inside the box, but a wall of Miami defenders stood in her away and the ball was blocked away.
Â
Eck nearly netted her second score of the game but her shot did not have enough curl on it as it went wide left of a diving Redhawk keeper and out of play.
Â
The Zips took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime while outshooting Miami, 3-1, and had the advantage in corner kicks, 2-1.
Â
In the second half of the contest, Akron continued to be aggressive and attempted to increase its lead for some insurance. The Zips played a ball up the left side of the field that looked to be heading out of play, but Amato hustled down the field to keep the ball in play and began an Akron attack. After continuing down the left side of the field and into the corner, Amato sent a pass over to Boyce who took one step to her right and ripped a shot on goal that was pulled in by Patricia Koutoulas.
Â
At the 72:24 mark of the match, Akron was awarded a corner kick. Junior Shea O'Brien (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) headed over to the corner and sent a ball into the box. Flying in from the back was Brown who leaped and got a head on the ball. Her header took one bounce off the ground and landed in the hands of Koutoulas for the save.
Â
After 90 minutes of exceptional play, the Zips came out victorious over the Redhawks, 1-0, in midweek action.
Â
Akron is back at the friendly confines of FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field on Sunday, Oct. 22 when the Zips meet Ball State at 1 p.m. All the action can be seen on ESPN3 and the Watch ESPN app. Prior to the match, Akron will hold its senior day ceremony.
