AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's soccer team learned its draw for the 2017 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship on Monday, Nov. 13, and the Zips (16-3-1) earned the No. 5 national seed and will host the winner of the Washington (12-6-1)/Seattle (14-3-4) match in second-round action on Sunday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m. at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
In the other half of the Zips' draw, No. 12 Notre Dame (11-6-2) awaits the winner of Thursday's Wisconsin (10-4-5)/Illinois at Chicago (11-5-3) tilt on Sunday, Nov. 19.
The winner of the Mid-American Conference tournament title, Akron will be making its 11th consecutive and 32nd overall tournament appearance.
When postseason play begins, the Zips will join an elite group of just four Division I programs that have qualified for the NCAA Championships in each of the past 11 seasons. Only Indiana, Maryland, and Virginia can share that claim.
Also seeded in the Zips' region are No. 4 Louisville (11-2-4) and No. 13 Michigan (12-5-2). The remaining top-four overall national seeds went to No. 1 Wake Forest (17-1-2), No. 2 Indiana (15-0-5) and No. 3 North Carolina (14-3-1).
The 2017 College Cup will be played at Talen Energy Stadium in Philadelphia, Pa., on Dec. 8 and 10.
The Zips, who have won 10-consecutive matches, will be making their 32nd all-time appearance in the NCAA postseason. Akron has advanced to the round of 16 in six of the last nine seasons and captured the school's first national championship in any sport in 2010.
A year ago, Akron registered a 2-0 victory past Villanova in the opening round at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field before dropping a 1-0 second-round decision at Indiana.
Washington will be making its 24th NCAA Tournament appearance. The Huskies enter the tournament at 12-6-1 overall and finished third in the Pac-12 Conference with a 5-4-1 mark. Washington and Akron shared one common opponent this season as the Huskies bettered Utah Valley, 4-0, on Sept. 21.
Seattle has advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time and come into action on Thursday with a mark of 14-3-4 overall, including a 6-1-3 record en route to finishing second in the Western Athletic Conference. The Redhawks share two common opponents with the Zips in 2017 having fallen to Washington, 2-0, on Sept. 24, before defeating Utah Valley, 2-1, on Nov. 4.
Seattle opened the WAC Tournament with a 3-0 win over Cal-State Bakersfield on Nov. 8, before advancing to the title game on penalty kicks, 4-2, in a 0-0 double-overtime draw with host UNLV on Nov. 10. The Redhawks captured the league crown for the third time in the last five seasons with a 2-1 victory over San Jose State on Sunday, Nov. 12.
