BOCA RATON, Fla.– The University of Akron football team had a very busy day on Monday during its final day of preparation before the 2017 Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl game against Florida Atlantic.
Â
In the morning, 20 Zips visited with veterans at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center. They shared stories and handed out bobble heads.
Â
The entire team then participated in the Kickoff Luncheon at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. Guest speakers included Boca Raton Mayor Susan Haynie, Cheribundi president Steve Pear, and Built Ford Tough Football Legends Award recipient Steve Walsh. The event was highlighted by a question-answer session with both head coaches-- Terry Bowden and Lane Kiffin, and their famous football coach fathers– Bobby Bowden and Monte Kiffin.
Â
The head coaches and seven players from each team met with the media before heading back to their respective hotels.
Â
The evening was capped off with a pep rally for all of the fans at City Place. Marching bands, spirit squads, and mascots from Akron and FAU revved up the crowd.
Â
Tickets for the 2017 Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl are on sale for $57 each online only. Akron (7-6 overall) faces Florida Atlantic (10-3 overall) on Tuesday, Dec. 19, at 7 p.m. in Boca Raton, Fla. ESPN will televise the game.
