2017 AKRON MEN'S SOCCER ROSTER
AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron men's soccer squad under the leadership of fifth-year head coach Jared Embick, has announced the additions of Nate Brown (Scarborough, Ontario), Joao Moutinho (Lisbon, Portugal) and Christian Lue Young (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) to the Zips' squad for the 2017 campaign.
Additionally, Embick announced that Wan Kuzain Wan Kamal, a member of Akron's 2017 signing class, agreed to a professional contract with the Swope Park Rangers of the United Soccer League and will not be joining the Zips' program.
Brown, a defender, comes to Akron after playing his first three seasons at the College of Saint Rose. In three campaigns with the Golden Knights, he appeared in 44 matches, including making 42 starts, and registered three goals and one assist on the strength of 22 shots. He was twice honored as an All-Northeast-10 Conference second-team selection after garnering All-Rookie team honors as freshman.
"Nate is a great defender with experience," said Embick. "He is coming to us to earn his graduate degree and play his final year of college with the Zips. He is a central defender with good size and speed and with us losing two seniors starting center backs, his experience will be valuable for us. We are really excited about his potential in our system."
Moutinho, a defender, has been a member of the distinguished Sporting Lisbon Academy since joining as a player with the U-10 squad. Sporting Lisbon is the same academy that produced Cristiano Ronaldo. He has worked his way up through the academy and has been a valuable member of national championship squads for Sporting Lisbon while playing for their U-15 and U-19 squads.
"Joao has a great pedigree from having played at one of the premier youth academies in Europe," Embick explained. "A versatile player that can play left or right back, he plays with great intensity and energy and has tremendous skill attacking from the back. He is a great fit for the Akron style of play and we couldn't be more thrilled to have him."
Lue Young, a midfielder, appeared in 18 matches for Army West Point during the 2015 campaign, including making four starts and recorded 10 shots. A year ago, he played in 13 matches for Broward County Community College and registered two goals on 13 shots and was named a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Academic All-American. A two-year member of the Weston FC Academy team, he went on trial in 2014 with Liverpool and West Ham.
"Christian is a junior college transfer, who will bring us speed and skill to the flanks," said Embick. "We need players that have the ability to take players on and open the game up for us. Christian adds that dimension to our play and is a great addition to our program."
