Baseball Travels to Louisville for Weekend Series

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron baseball team will play its second series of the season this weekend at Louisville, Ky., against the University of Louisville in Jim Patterson Stadium. The first game will be on Friday at 3 p.m., the second on Saturday at 2 p.m., with the finale being played on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Akron comes into the weekend with a record of 0-3 after suffering an opening series sweep at the hands of Georgia Tech. UA had opportunities to change the outcome of the game on Friday and Sunday, as both games showed promise in the pitching staff.

UA fell to GT in the Friday opener by a score of 3-0, despite strong pitching performances by Jon Pusateri and John Valek. Pusateri returned from Tommy John surgery to toss 4.1 innings with four strikeouts and one earned run allowed, while Valek went 3.2 innings with one strikeout and one earned run allowed.

Georgia Tech took the Saturday game by a score of 10-3, but Akron rebounded on Sunday with competitive play in the 5-3 loss. The Akron bullpen performed admirably in the loss following the exit of starting pitcher JT Brubaker. Four pitchers combined to throw 3.2 innings of shutout baseball with three hits allowed.

The offense had a few bright spots shine through over the weekend, as well. Brady Stewart started strong in the first series of the season by collecting five hits over 10 at-bats with one double and one RBI. Freshman Daulton Mosbarger earned his first collegiate start, and registered two hits and a run scored this weekend. Junior College transfer Grant Alvarez recorded three hits and a run scored out of the cleanup spot against Georgia Tech.

Louisville holds a record of 2-1 after playing three games against three separate opponents over the past weekend. The Cardinals opened up the season with a 2-0 loss to Indiana, but bounced back to win the next two against USF and Purdue by scores of 10-1 and 9-4, respectively. Cardinals' pitcher Jeff Thompson was named BIG EAST Baseball Pitcher of the Week on Monday after his strong performance against USF.

"We're anxious to get back on the field following the Tech series, and we have another challenging weekend against a very challenging Louisville team. We've been working on things we saw this past weekend and look to improve. We want to continue to build on improvements each weekend," Head Coach Rick Rembielak said of the Louisville series.

Akron and Louisville matched up for the first time in 2002, and have not faced eachother since. UA was swept by Louisville in the 2002 doubleheader by scores of 3-1 and 6-2.
