BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The University of Akron (9-29, 6-9 MAC) baseball team won the series finale of the three game Mid-American Conference series against Bowling Green State University (13-20, 8-7 MAC) by a score of 7-3 on Sunday afternoon at Stellar Field.
Akron baseball sent Michael Steensen to the mound to start the game at pitcher, his third start of the season. Steensen tossed 4.2 innings with two earned runs and two walks. He was given a no-decision in the victory.
Matt Rembielak led Akron in RBI with one occurring on a bases-loaded walk and the other on a single through the right side. The native of Tallmadge, Ohio finished the day with two hits, two RBI and one walk.
Freshman Daulton Mosbarger relieved Steensen, and earned his first win of his collegiate career. Mosbarger pitched 2.0 innings with zero earned runs allowed, and earned the win to improve his record to 1-0.
Matt LaRocca registered five at-bats with one run scored and one hit on Sunday, while also earning the save for the Akron bullpen. LaRocca notched his third save of the season after 2.1 innings pitched with three strikeouts and one hit allowed.
Sophomore Joey Havrilak made the start in right field for UA, and turned in a two-hit, one-run performance at the plate. Havrilak leads the Zips offense with 17 runs scored this season.
Overall, the Zips offense totaled 12 hits on the afternoon, along with three walks and three strikeouts. Four different Akron batters – Havrilak, Rembielak, Jared Turocy and Brady Stewart – registered two-hit games in the win on Sunday.
Akron will travel to Buffalo, N.Y., for one midweek game on Tuesday against Canisius College at 3 p.m. The Golden Griffins defeated Akron earlier this season by a score of 8-5 in six innings on March 23.
