Baseball Defeats WMU on Wednesday, 8-2
AVON, Ohio – A spectacular start from lefty Pat Dyer and a five-run sixth gave The University of Akron (20-14) baseball team an 8-2 win over Western Michigan University (13-19) in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at All Pro Freight Stadium. UA is now riding a six game win streak.
"Great win overall against a conference opponent in a non-conference matchup," Head coach Rick Rembielak said after the game. "We were able to score early on their pitcher, and Pat [Dyer] gave us another strong midweek start."
Dyer, a southpaw, started on the hill for the Zips, and was spectacular in 6.0 innings of work with four strikeouts, no walks and four hits allowed. Over his past two starts, Dyer has worked 13.0 innings with one run allowed, 10 strikeouts and one walk. His record improved to 3-2 with the win.
"Dyer used all of his pitches effectively keeping WMU's batters off-balance," Rembielak said. "He has been very promising in his past two starts for us."
The Zips controlled much of the game against WMU on Wednesday. UA scored the first run of the game in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead on a RBI double to right field by Billy Salem, scoring James Sheltrown from first base.
Following a scoreless bottom of the second for the Broncos, UA added to the lead with two runs in the top of the third. Devan Ahart led off the inning with a single, and quickly stole second for his 16th steal of the season. Ahart and Simonton then recorded a double-steal, with Ahart scoring on an errant throw from WMU catcher Caleb Caton. Simonton also scored in the frame on a wild pitch, making the score 3-0 Akron.
Both teams posted zeroes in the fourth and fifth inning before Akron broke it wide open with a five-run rally in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded and one away, sophomore catcher Derek Carmichael hit an RBI single to left, his first RBI of 2014, to kick off the scoring effort.
Junior Matt Rembielak then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Salem on the play. Sophomore Daulton Mosbarger delivered an RBI infield single, and sophomore Kris Simonton capped off the rally with a two run single to left to bring the game to 8-0 Zips.
The Broncos scored their first run of the afternoon on an RBI double off Akron reliever Jon Pusateri in the bottom of the seventh. WMU would also add one run in the eighth to bring the game to its final score of 8-2. Pusateri worked 2.0 innings with two runs allowed and two strikeouts.
Redshirt senior Joe Cochran worked a scoreless ninth to secure the non-conference win.
Overall on offense, the Zips totaled 13 base hits, six RBI and five walks. Ahart led the mob with a team-high three base hits along with one run scored. Carmichael, Mosbarger and Sheltrown had two hits apiece in the contest, with Sheltrown leading the squad with two runs scored.
