AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron (21-17) baseball right-hander Joe Cochran hurled a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts on Tuesday night, as UA defeated Youngstown State University (8-25) by a final score of 5-0 at Canal Park, the  home of the Akron RubberDucks.

The Zips were first to put a run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first following a scoreless frame by Cochran in the top half. With James Sheltrown on third base, Brian Lees drove in Sheltrown on a sacrifice fly to right field putting Akron up 1-0.

Akron struck again in the second on an RBI groundout by James Meeker III, scoring Kris Simonton from third and giving UA a 2-0 advantage.

The next three innings would go scoreless for both sides, until the Zips erupted for a three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth. Billy Salem, Meeker and Daulton Mosbarger had RBI at-bats in the sixth to put Akron ahead 5-0 and bring the game to its final score.

Jon Pusateri came out of the Zips bullpen to replace Cochran in the eighth. Pusateri had a shaky seventh, as he loaded the bases with one out, but was able to escape the situation unscathed. He would go on to finish the contest with two innings, two hits allowed, one walk and two strikeouts.

Cochran, a Tallmadge, Ohio native, had one of the strongest starts by an Akron pitcher this season. He totaled career-highs with 10 strikeouts and seven innings pitched. He registered a strikeout in five of his seven innings on the mound, including two innings with three strikeouts apiece. Cochran faced just 24 batters in the 92-pitch outing as his record improved to 1-0 this season.

Akron totaled nine base hits, five RBI and four walks on Tuesday evening. Simonton, Meeker and Dom Iero had two base hits each, while Meeker led the offense with a pair of RBI. Devan Ahart stole his team-leading 20th base of the season in the win.

The Zips will play again tomorrow at 6 p.m., in Canal Park, this time against Wright State. Wednesday's gameday promotion will be dollar day, including dollar hot dogs and dollar beers. Admission is free to all Akron home games, with live stats and a video stream available through GoZips.com.
