Last weekend…

Akron travelled to the University at Buffalo for a weekend Mid-American Conference series, which resulted in three losses for the Zips. Buffalo took game one, 3-2, despite a strong performance from starting pitcher John Valek III, who tossed 6.0 innings with one run allowed. Sophomore Kris Simonton led the attack with two hits and two runs scored.

In game two, the Zips held a 3-2 lead after a three-run third inning, but ended up falling to the Bulls, 6-3, in the final tally. Redshirt junior Devan Ahart went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the loss.

UA dropped the series finale on Sunday, as UB had four multi-run innings en route to an 11-6 win. Freshman James Meeker III, who batted .333 this weekend, totaled a team-high three hits and three run scored.

Midweek probables...

Steensen will be making his eighth start of the season on Tuesday at Youngstown State, following a one-hit, six-inning start against Wright State last Wednesday. Steensen totaled four strikeouts and did not walk a single batter. The right-hander has two quality starts this season.

Cochran is scheduled to start on the mound for the Zips on Wednesday. In his second collegiate start last Tuesday vs. YSU, Cochran was masterful in 7.0 shutout innings with just one hit allowed during the 5-0 win. Along the way, he totaled 10 strikeouts compared to two walks, holding YSU to a .045 batting average in his time on the mound. Cochran set career highs in innings pitched and strikeouts, while also notching his first career win.

20 wins…

The Zips are currently 21-21 heading into midweek action. UA picked up the 20th win of the season on April 16 in a non-conference matchup against Western Michigan.

This season is third-year head coach Rick Rembielak's first 20-win season in his career with Akron. UA last accumulated 20 wins in a season in 2010, when the team went 21-34 overall.

Akron has had five 20-win campaigns in the past 10 seasons.

Scouting the Penguins…

Youngstown State enters the week with a 9-28 overall record, after winning one of three from Milwaukee this past weekend. YSU bats a collective .245, led by Alex Larivee at a .320 batting average with six extra-base hits and 11 RBI.

The Penguins scheduled starter is southpaw Jared Wright, who enters the contest with a 9.12 ERA over 25.2 innings pitched.

Akron holds an all-time series record of 96-62 against YSU, with the last win occurring last Tuesday by a score of 5-0.

Scouting the Raiders…

Wright State comes into the midweek action with an overall record of 25-16, following a series sweep at Oakland by score of 8-6, 11-8 and 17-6. Offensively, the Raiders have three players – Michael Timm, Jeff Limbaugh and Jason DeFevers – batting above .300. The team owns a batting average of .273.

The Zips own an all-time series record of 10-26 vs. Wright State, after last week's 3-1 loss for UA at home.

Looking ahead…

Akron will play three-games at home against Ball State this upcoming weekend, which will be the final home MAC weekend series of the regular season. The three-game set begins on Friday at 3 p.m., on Lee R. Jackson Field, with the final two games scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m., on both days.
