DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Akron (22-21) baseball team defeated Wright State University (25-18) by a final score of 9-5 on Wednesday night at Nischwitz Stadium.
Sophomore Michael Steensen made the start for the Zips, but was roughed up in 2.2 innings of work. Steensen totaled three earned runs and two strikeouts, earning a no-decision for the evening.
Akron jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly from Devan Ahart to score James Sheltrown in the top of the first. However, Wright State would put together three runs in the third and two runs in the fourth to take a commanding 5-1 advantage.
The Zips did not back down, plating seven runs between the fifth and seventh innings. Redshirt junior Matt LaRocca highlighted the evening with a two-run home run, his third of 2014, to left field. Freshman Dom Iero also registered a two-run double in the seventh to push Akron to a 9-5 win.
Freshman Josh Davis earned his first collegiate win following 1.1 innings with two hits allowed and one strikeout. Junior Jon Pusateri recorded his first save of the season with three innings to finish the game with three strikeouts.
UA will look ahead to a three-game series at home against Ball State, beginning on Friday at 3 p.m., on Lee R. Jackson Field. The series will continue with games on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. Prior to Sunday's contest, Akron baseball will be honoring the 2014 Senior Class.
