White Edges Blue, 24-3, in Akron Spring Game

AKRON, Ohio – Akron football's White squad edged out its Blue counterpart, 24-3, in the Zips' annual Spring Game on Saturday afternoon at InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field.

The White squad, coached by associate head coach and defensive coordinator Chuck Amato and his defensive staff, went 16-of-25 for 288 yards passing and three touchdowns, one each from the three quarterbacks.

The Blue squad, coached by offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach A.J. Milwee and the offensive staff, was-16-of-32 for 147 yards passing with an interception.

In the first quarter, redshirt sophomore QB Nick Johns (Leesburg, Va.) tossed a 34-yard pass to senior WR A.J. Coney (Orlando, Fla.) for the first score. Junior PK Tom O'Leary (Tucker, Ga.) tacked on the extra point, giving the White squad a 7-0 lead.

As the quarter ended, the Blue squad responded with a 23-yard field goal from senior PK Zach Gingerich (Bellefontaine, Ohio) to close the gap, 7-3.

The White squad added 10 points in the second quarter. Sophomore PK Jerry Fitschen (Orange, Calif.) nailed a 21-yard field goal. Blue was driving on a third-and-11 on the 15 when sophomore LB James King (Miami, Fla.) intercepted a Johns' pass. White took advantage of the turnover as redshirt freshman QB Kato Nelson (Hollywood, Fla.) connected with senior WR Tra'Von Chapman (Cincinnati, Ohio) moments later on an eight-yard TD pass for a 17-3 halftime lead.

Neither team scored in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, senior QB Clayton Uecker (Akron, Ohio) threw a 54-yard touchdown pass to senior WR Fransohn Bickley (Akron, Ohio) for the game's final 24-3 score.

Junior LB Travonte Junius (Akron, Ohio) led the White defense with nine solo tackles and a sack.  Junior DB Nathan Bischof (Akron, Ohio) led the Blue with four solo stops.

At halftime, the coaching staff honored several players for their work during spring drills. (full list is below). Earning offensive MVP honors was senior TE Mykel Traylor Bennett. Junior CB Darian Dailey and senior LB Andrew Hauser received defensive MVP honors.

Season ticket plans—which include a ticket to all six home games as well as a parking pass—start at only $60 each. Chima Athletics Ticket Office at InfoCision Stadium - Summa Field (located at 375 E. Exchange Street, near Gate 1 at the southwest corner of the venue, at the corner of E. Exchange and S. Union streets) during business hours (Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

The season ticket renewal deadline in June 15. Payment plans are available.

Group tickets start at $10 each (with a minimum of 15 people).
