AKRON, Ohio – New uniforms and a number of unique promotions will highlight Social Media Night when The University of Akron men's basketball team plays host to Ohio in a nationally televised Mid-American Conference East Division battle on Saturday, Feb. 2.
The contest will serve as Social Media Night and comes on the heels of the Zips' largest crowd on the season against Buffalo on Saturday. Akron, which has won 10-straight at home and 11-straight overall, plays host to the Bobcats in the first of two highly anticipated matchups featuring the last four MAC Tournament champions (Akron 2009, 2011; Ohio 2010, 2012).
As part of the festivities, the Zips (15-4, 6-0 MAC) will wear new Nike black uniforms when they face the Bobcats (15-5, 6-0 MAC) at 5 p.m. ET on ESPNU. The black uniforms feature the Akron Z in black and white on the jersey, blue and white-accented side panels, as well as the word "Akron" outlined in white on the shorts.
Based on the success of the Akron Football Social Media Day, the Zips will have several promotions and events surrounding the contest with the Bobcats focused on promoting the department's successful social media accounts.
Fans will also notice a new look on the court of the JAR, as the sidelines near each bench and the basket supports will be adorned with the hashtags #ZipsGameday and #ThinkBigger.
The #ZipsGameday hashtag has seen much success this season as the department's overall gameday hashtag, trending regionally on several occasions.
The #ThinkBigger hashtag is based on ninth-year head coach Keith Dambrot's mantra for this year's team as the Zips look to "Think Bigger" and propel the program – one of the top mid-majors in the country – to the next level.
For the first time at a Zips men's basketball game, two Akron fans will be selected to serve as social media correspondents to cover Saturday's doubleheader, including the men's contest against Ohio and the women's contest against Buffalo, which is set to begin at 2 p.m. There are several ways fans can enter for a chance to become a correspondent.
Fans can purchase a $15 general admission ticket which provides them entrance to both the men's and women's basketball contests, and a #ZipsGameday t-shirt (while supplies last). The package also comes with an entry for a chance to win one of the two social media correspondent spots. Fans wishing to purchase this package can find the promo on Facebook and Twitter.
Fans that already have tickets for the contest and students can also enter to become a social media correspondent by tweeting at @ZipsMBB using the hashtag #ZipsSocialMedia or by sending a message to the ZipsMBB Facebook page and typing #ZipsSocialMedia in the body of the message. Deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29.
Other promotions include interactive fan voting throughout the upcoming week to help determine different elements of the #ZipsGameday experience, including concession specials, band music selections and more. There will also be a #ZipsGameday photo contest. Fans who send photos from their gameday experience at Rhodes Arena to @ZipsMBB with the hashtag #ZipsGameday have a chance to win a basketball autographed by the entire men's team. The winner will be determined by a fan vote on Facebook, with the photo gaining the most likes earning the top prize.
Limited upper and lower reserved tickets remain, with upper reserved tickets are $25 and lower reserved tickets are on sale for $35. Fans can also purchase general admission tickets for the matchup for just $15.
Fans can purchase a mini plan in the Upper Reserved starting at just $48. This mini plan includes any of the three remaining games of your choice (up to a $70 value if you choose both Ohio and Kent State in your package). Five-game mini plans are also on sale.
In addition to single-game tickets and mini plans, Akron fans can also purchase the "Zips All-Access 10-Pack." This unique ticket package includes 10 vouchers, redeemable for general admission tickets to any 2012-13 regular-season home athletics contest for the Zips five ticketed sports, as well as 10 buy-one, get-one-free breakfast or lunch extra value meal coupons at McDonald's – all for just $90.
Students are also encouraged to pick up a FREE student ticket for the contest. With a sellout expected, Zips athletics is distributing tickets for students to ensure admission to the contest. Click here for more information on how to pick up a student ticket.
