Wilmington, N.C. – The Akron men's golf team fired an opening round 314 (+26) to finish ninth after 18 holes of play, however, the Zips registered a 319 (+31) second round, placing 12th overall at the Seahawk Intercollegiate on Sunday.
Junior George Baylis (Ascot, England) and sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) led the Zips' scoring at the par-72 Country Club of Landfall course that stretches 7,036 yards. Baylis and Grayson carded 156 (+12) 36-hole scores en rout to 35th place on the leaderboard. Baylis carded rounds of 77 (+5) and 79 (+7), while Grayson used rounds of 76 (+4) and 80 (+8) scores.
Senior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, France) followed with rounds of 80 (+8) and 78 (+6) for a 158 (+14) two-round total, while freshman Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) and sophomore Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio) finished with 163 (+19) and 167 (+23) scores, respectively.
Kent State leads the field with a 4-under par 572 two-round team total, while Josh Whalen and Gisli Sveinbergsson sit on top of the leaderboard with 137 (-7) and 139 (-5) tournament totals.
The Zips are scheduled to start the final round at 9:21 a.m. from the 10th tee – Appleby (9:21), McFarland (9:30), Pfeiffer (9:39), Baylis (9:48), and Grayson (9:57).
