AKRON, Ohio
– University of Akron senior goalkeeper David Meves has been named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

Meves played an instrumental role in the Zips' shutouts of No. 10 St. John's and No. 11 South Florida last weekend and was named Defensive MVP of The University of Akron Tournament. Akron, which enters the week with an overall record of 4-1-2, won the tournament with a scoreless draw against the Red Storm Friday and a 5-0 rout of the Bulls Sunday.

For the weekend, Meves, a native of Arlington Heights, Ill., recorded six saves while earning the 41st and 42nd shutouts of his career. He currently sits in second place on the school's all-time list and trails Evan Bush's all-time standard (48) by just six.

In particular, his first stop early in the second half against STJ was of the spectacular variety as he was there to smother a low liner by St. John's Andres Vargas, who was alone leading a Red Storm counter attack.

Meves is a three-time All-Mid-American Conference honoree and has been named to the Academic All-America Team in each of the past two seasons.

Meves and the Zips will next open their MAC schedule this Saturday at Bowling Green. UA and BGSU will kick off at 7 p.m. ET, at Cochrane Field.
