CINCINNATI, Ohio
– The University of Akron men's soccer team had to settle for a 1-all draw at Xavier Saturday in its spring exhibition finale at Xavier Soccer Complex.

A highlight-reel worthy goal by incoming freshman Richie Laryea gave the Zips a 1-0 lead in the 75th minute. But the Musketeers countered with the equalizer in the match's final seconds to deny UA the win.

Laryea's strike came from 25 yards out and sailed into the upper corner of the net.

With the tie, Akron finished the spring season with a record of 2-2-1, including victories at Cleveland State and VCU. In each of UA's losses, the match was decided by one goal as Akron was defeated by Dayton by a count of 2-1 and Louisville by a tally of 1-0.

Akron captured Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament titles while posting an overall record of 17-4-1 during Jared Embick's first year as head coach at UA in 2013. The Zips were playing their best soccer in the final third of the season – taking a 10-match unbeaten streak (9-0-1) into the NCAA Tournament – and defeated defending champion Indiana in the first round.

UA is scheduled to face six teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament in the fall and five – Maryland, Michigan State, New Mexico, Penn State and Wake Forest – that advanced to the Round of 16 or beyond. Click here for the full 2014 fall schedule, which was announced earlier this month.
