Rifle Gets By IUP in Saturday's Home Opener

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron rifle team posted a 4,536-4,049 victory over visiting Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Saturday in the squad's home opener at Schrank Hall South Marksmanship Training Facility on campus.

The Zips owned a 2,242-2,019 margin in the smallbore portion of the competition, and bested their opponent in the air rifle component of the day as well, 2,294-2,030.

Leading the charge in the smallbore division, sophomore David Brummond set a new career best score and earned top gun honors with a 572. Falling in slots two and three were sophomore teammates Adam Auclair (567) and Nicole Dietrich (565), both of which also set new career high marks. Finishing in the seventh position, sophomore Jim Carter (561) also set a new career high.

"Definitely the day of the sophomore," Akron head coach Newt Engle said. "Even with this win comes the knowledge that we still have some work ahead of us in this division."

Air rifle placed junior Sarah Benjamin in the top gun position with her 579, and teammates junior Ryan Stein and Brummond behind her, both with 575. In Brummond's third set of six air rifle targets, he nailed 100 out of 100.

Akron will next compete in the Boilermaker Invitational at Purdue on Oct. 30. The Zips look to defend their title in the event, after taking home the trophy in 2009.
