Softball Takes Zippy to Visit Local School
AKRON, Ohio - Always active in the community, members of The University of Akron softball team took Zippy to visit the Early Childhood Center (ECC) in nearby Broadview Heights, Ohio on Friday for its annual Family Day. Taking on the role of Zippy was Alex Riedeman, who just completed her senior season for UA. She was accompanied by associate head coach Julie Prattand team manager Amanda Toth. The ECC, established in 2003 as part of the North Royalton City School District, is home to both preschool and kindergarten classes for roughly 350 children. Zippy spent the morning taking pictures with the students and mingling with the families in attendance.
"It's always nice to get back out in the community during the summer after a busy spring season," said Riedeman, who posted a 12-11 record in the circle in 27 starts for the Zips during her final campaign. "Spending time with local kids is always a fun and worthwhile experience."
Under the direction of Coach Julie Jones, the softball team prides itself in its dedication to community outreach. Throughout each year, Jones' student-athletes volunteer their time at numerous events and community functions to give back to the greater Akron area.
