AKRON, Ohio- In the opening day of a three-game series, the Akron softball team split a twinbill with Ohio on a sunny Friday afternoon at Lee R. Jackson Field.
The Zips took the first game, 1-0. The Bobcats captured the nightcap with a 7-1 victory.
The Zips improved to 18-22 overall and 7-7 in MAC play, while the Bobcats fell to 27-12 and 8-6 in MAC play.
In the first game, the game remained scoreless for five-and-a-half innings until senior OF Savannah Fruin (Delray Beach, Fla.) hit an RBI single to left field, scoring junior OF Ashley Sims (Brooksville, Fla.).
Freshman lefty Lexie Handley (Mogadore, Ohio) pitched a complete game, throwing a one-hitter. She had five strikeouts and one walk.
In the nightcap, Ohio scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning. A sacrifice fly got the Bobcats on the board, followed by a three-RBI double to right center put them up 4-0. The Bobcats added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI single and an RBI double to left field.
The Zips's lone run came in the bottom of the sixth inning from an RBI single to left field from Sims, which allowed junior Kayla Schlosser (Erie, Pa.) to score.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Bobcats tacked on one more run on an RBI sacrifice fly, which completed their 7-1 victory over the Zips.
Junior Kooper Vertz (Dilsboro, Ind.) took the loss (2-2 overall) She pitched 4.2 innings, fanning two and walking one. Sophomore Kelly Hysong (Beach City, Ohio) came in briefly in the bottom of the fourth inning and was replaced by junior Nicole Best (Broadview Heights, Ohio) after walking a batter. Best pitched 2.1 innings, fanning two and walking four batters.
Akron closes out its series with Ohio with a single game on Saturday, April 15, at Lee R. Jackson Field at 1 p.m.
