CLEVELAND, Ohio – Akron freshman left-hander Lexie Handley (Mogadore, Ohio) captured Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for the East Division on Tuesday.
Last week, Handley led the Zips to three MAC wins. Handley threw 21.0 innings, including three complete games, including a one-hitter in the 1-0 shutout win over Ohio on Friday. She struck out 17 batters and walked three.
With her seven strikeouts in the 2-1 win over Ohio in the series finale, Handley moved into eighth place in the school record book for Ks in a season with 156 strikeouts. She also stands 10th in walks in a season (61).
On the season, Handley is the Zips' top pitcher. She has appeared in 34 game with 26 starts. Holding a 2.30 ERA, she stands 16-13 overall with seven shutouts. She's thrown a MAC-high 176.1 innings and has 156 strikeouts and 61 walks.
The MAC honor was the third for Handley who earned pitcher honors for the first time on Feb. 21. She and sophomore designated player Kelly Hysong (Beach City, Ohio) swept MAC honors on April 3.
Akron hosts Dayton in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 19, at 3 p.m. at Lee R. Jackson Field. ESPN3 will broadcast both games online.
