AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron senior Rachel Tecca has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America® first team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced Thursday.

Tecca is UA's first women's basketball player ever to receive first team honors, after being named to the second team a year ago.

"I am very proud of Rachel for earning this prestigious award," said Akron head coach Jodi Kest. "She has worked extremely hard both on and off the basketball court for the last five years to get to where she is today. I am honored and humbled to have coached such a well-rounded student-athlete."

Tecca maintains a 3.89 graduate GPA, as she is on track to complete her MBA this spring. The fifth-year senior received a bachelor's degree in marketing management from Akron in December of 2012.

On the court, Tecca has changed the face of the Akron women's basketball program. This season, she became the school's all-time leading scorer and rebounder, consistently ranking in the nation's top-10 in points per game. Tecca is the second player in Mid-American Conference history to surpass 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career, and is one of just five active players in Division I to reach the milestone.

The Tallmadge, Ohio native has been named MAC East Player of the Week four times this season and 10 times throughout her career. Tecca broke UA's single-game scoring record when she dropped 43 points and grabbed 22 rebounds in just 27 minutes of action against Eastern Michigan on Jan. 28. She was named NCAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week for her record-setting performance, marking the first time a Zip has earned the national award.

Tecca has played in 129 games in an Akron uniform, another school record, and is set to make her 100th career start this weekend when the Zips travel to Ohio on Saturday, Feb. 22.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00 and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution.
