Hanna Ek Earns Capital One Academic All District Honor

AKRON, Ohio - University of Akron women's golfer Hanna Ek was named to the 2010‐11 Capital One Academic All‐District® Women's At‐Large Second Team for District IV as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Ek, a native of Falun, Sweden, is the first Zips' golfer to earn a spot of the All-District team in the program's three-year history. Through her junior season, she has a 3.98 cumulative GPA while studying mechanical engineering.

"This is a great honor for Hanna and she definitely deserves it," women's golf head coach Jenny King said. "She makes a lot of sacrifices for our program, both in the classroom and on the course, and her hard work has made her successful at both."

Ek finished the season second on the team in scoring average (77.45) while posting one victory and four top-10 finishes in nine events. In October, she won the 2010 MAC Preview (Oct. 18-19) with a 5-over 149. She earned Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week the week following her victory.

Ek also helped Akron win the Third Annual Zippy Invitational (Oct. 11-12), the first team title in program history. Additionally, she carded the top two-round score on the team (149), posted the second-lowest round in school history (71) and assisted in setting school records for team single-round score (293) and three-round score (891).

In the classroom, Ek helped the Zips to the highest UA team GPA for the semester (3.53) and NCAA Public Recognition honors for scoring in the top 10 percent in the Academic Progress Rates (APR) in all of women's collegiate golf.

For her work in the classroom, Ek earned the MAC Commissioners Award and was named to the MAC Honor Roll. The criteria for the commissioner's award include a 3.5 minimum cumulative grade-point average after two semesters or three quarters. The MAC Honor Roll requires a minimum 3.0 GPA.

The Academic All‐District® teams include student‐athletes that are at least a sophomore, appear in a minimum of 50 percent of their team's games/events and carries at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA. District IV includes schools from Alabama, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan and Tennessee.
