Women’s Golf Signs Two Student-Athletes for 2012-13
AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron women's golf head coach Jenny King announced on Tuesday that Sierra Everson (Gahanna, Ohio) and Frida Fougberg (Partille, Sweden) have signed national letters of intent to play for the Zips at the start of the 2012-13 season.
"I'm very excited about the addition of these two great players to the 2012 class," King said. "They both come with competitive experience and success from the highest levels which will no doubt help them achieve their goals at Akron. This is a big step in the right direction for our program and I can't wait for them to arrive on campus next fall."
Everson, a senior at Gahanna Lincoln High School, concluded her high school career with 13 victories, including six as a senior, and helped Gahanna Lincoln to an overall team record of 398-132-4 over her four-year career. She guided GLHS to an eighth-place finish at the 2011 OHSAA State Championship.
A four-time Ohio Capital Conference (OCC) first-team selection, Everson also earned two OCC Ohio Division Player of the Year honors (2010, 2011) and two All-Central District First-team honors (2010, 2011). She is ranked No. 6 in the Junior Golf Scoreboard Ohio Class of 2010 and is ranked in the top-100 in the AJGA Class of 2012 Polo Ranking (78) and the GolfWeek Class of 2012 Ranking (86).
"Sierra is an all-around great player and has one of the most fundamentally sound golf swings that I have seen," King said. "She has seen rapid improvement over the past couple of years and this past summer played at a very high level. I am excited about the impact that Sierra will have on our program, not only as a player on the course, but as a teammate to our current players."
Fougberg, a senior at Lerums Gymnasium, will join fellow Swede Sara Johansson on the squad. In 2011, she recorded one victory and three runner-up finishes, including a win at the Place Strömstad Junior Open thanks to rounds of 75 and 72. She currently ranks 49th in the Swedish Golf rankings.
In 2010, Fougberg won the Skandia Tour Regional #1 event in Göteborg with a score of 151 (76-75) and added a runner-up finish at the Skandia Tour Riks #2—Bohuslän/Dal event (75-72-71).
"Frida is a very consistent player and that is something that every team needs to succeed," King said. "The strongest part of her game is her short game around the greens. She has great touch and is confident that she can get the ball in the hole in any up and down situation. I feel that Frida's dedication to the game will have an immediate positive impact on our team."
Akron will return to action on Feb. 26, 2012, when the squad travels to Kiawah Island, S.C., for the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic.
