CLEVELAND – University of Akron senior tennis player Zara Harutyunyan was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday. A three-time MAC Player of the Year recipient, this is the fourth time she has earned the league's weekly award and first time this season.
Harutyunyan posted a 6-0 record (3-0 doubles, 3-0 singles) in leading UA to a 3-0 mark last weekend and improving the squad's dual-match record to 5-0. The Zips topped IUPUI (6-1) and Wright State (7-0) at home, and West Virginia (7-0) on the road. She tallied three wins at No. 1 singles (all in straight sets), two victories at No. 1 doubles and one decision at No. 2 doubles. Four of those wins (2 in doubles, 2 in singles) came during a Saturday home doubleheader, with the other two coming on Sunday afternoon on the road.
Her previous player of the week awards came for the periods ending on Jan. 20, 2009; Feb. 25, 2009 and April 7, 2010.
The Zips look to keep their win streak alive when they play host to New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) at their indoor home of LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET, then compete at Cleveland State at 11 a.m. on Sunday and host Youngstown State that same day at 5 p.m., also at LaTuchie Tennis Center.
