CLEVELAND – University of Akron freshman tennis player Olga Shkundina was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced late Wednesday.
Shkundina, who turned age 16 in January, posted a 4-0 record (2-0 doubles, 2-0 singles) this past weekend as UA earned a 6-1 win at then 56th-ranked Dartmouth on Friday and was edged 4-3 at then 44th-ranked Brown on Sunday. Shkundina's performance helped the Zips to their first-ever victory over a ranked Division-I opponent (Dartmouth) and also aided in the team earning a No. 57 listing in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association ranking, the highest in program history.
A native of Ufa, Russia, Shkundina paired with junior Angelina Jogasuria at No. 3 doubles to post an 8-6 win over Brown's Sarah Kandath and Nikita Uberoi, and an 8-7 (3) victory over Dartmouth's Sarah Leonard and Jeri Reichel. At No. 2 singles, she defeated Brown's Cassandra Herzberg 6-2, 5-2 (retired), and Dartmouth's Akiko Okuda, 7-6 (4), 6-3. She has won 13-straight dual-match singles competitions (12 at the No. 2 flight and one at the No. 1 flight).
Shkundina is the second member of the Zips' tennis squad to earn this honor this season, with senior Zara Harutyunyan doing so on Feb. 8.
Akron, the defending Mid-American Conference champion, is 12-1 this season. The team is idle until March 11 and 12 when it travels west to face off against New Mexico and Northern Arizona, respectively, in Flagstaff, Ariz.
