AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron tennis team wraps up a three-match homestand and closes out the home portion of its regular-season schedule this week versus Eastern Michigan on Friday and Toledo on Saturday. First serve is set for 1 p.m. ET for both contests which are scheduled to be played outdoors at Springside Racquet Club in nearby Fairlawn.
The Zips (18-2, 4-1 Mid-American Conference) have won four-straight and six of their last seven matches, and are 9-1 at home this season. This weekend also serves as the program's annual Alumni Weekend with activities with former letterwinners planned around Saturday's match.
The closure of UA's home schedule for 2012 also means that it will honor its lone senior, three-time MAC Player of the Year Zara Harutyunyan, prior to the match on Saturday with Toledo. With her 6-4, 6-0 singles win over Buffalo's Tanvi Shah last Saturday, Harutyunyan tallied the 233rd win of her collegiate career (121 singles, 112 doubles) to become the MAC's winningest player (passing Western Michigan's Kerstin Pahl).
In last weekend's 6-1 victory over Buffalo, Akron won at all three doubles positions and took straight-set decisions in order at No. 2, 4 and 1 singles to clinch match point. Since the contest was already decided, a super tiebreaker was used to decide a winner at No. 3, 5 and 6 singles, which each went into a third set. UB scored its lone point at No. 5 singles.
Eastern Michigan enters the weekend with a 3-1 record in MAC play and 7-12 mark overall. Toledo (8-9, 1-3 MAC) faces off against Buffalo on Friday before traveling to Akron the next day.
