AKRON, Ohio – The nationally-ranked University of Akron tennis team closes out the regular season this weekend by making a trip to the state of Illinois.
The Zips, listed 75th in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, compete at Mid-American Conference opponent Northern Illinios on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET and then take on non-league foe UIC on Sunday at noon.
Akron (20-2, 6-1 MAC) has won six-straight and eight of its last nine matches, and looks to improve its 8-1 record in road contests this season. In away and neutral competitions combined, the squad is 9-1.
Northern Illinois (11-4, 2-4 MAC) has won two of its last three contests, including a 4-3 victory over Ball State in its most recent outing. The Zips topped the Huskies 7-0 in last season's meeting in Akron.
UIC (12-8) boasts a 12-match win streak and faces off against fellow Horizon League member Valparaiso on Saturday before playing host to UA the next day. The Zips are 3-0 all-time against the Flames.
Akron has secured the No. 2 seed in next week's conference tournament, which will be hosted by Northern Illinois in DeKalb. The Zips claimed last season's tournament championship as the second seed and earned their first-ever league title. The event's winner gains the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
