AKRON, Ohio – For the first time in program history, The University of Akron tennis team will participate in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kick-Off Weekend on Jan. 25-28, 2013. The Zips, who have claimed back-to-back Mid-American Conference tournament championships, were selected for the event through a draft conducted on Wednesday by the ITA.
Akron will travel to Los Angeles, one of 16 regional sites, to compete against host school USC, Tulane and UC Irvine. USC closed out the 2012 season ranked No. 4 nationally, while Tulane was listed No. 58 and UC Irvine finished No. 68 in the ITA's national poll. UA was listed in the rankings at various points during the season, reaching a season and program high of No. 57.
"We are extremely excited about this wonderful opportunity," Akron head coach Brandon Padgett said. "As we continue to grow our program, we strive to not simply reach a national level of exposure, but rather remain a consistent presence at that level. These young women deserve the opportunity to play in an event such as this, and I could not be more proud of what that means about the direction in which our program is moving."
The Zips' complete 2012-13 schedule will be announced at a later date.
