Two Zips Tennis Players Compete in USTA Pro Circuit Event

2012 USTA Women's Pro Circuit Tournament Information

AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron tennis players Zara Harutyunyan and Ksenia Berestetska recently competed in a USTA Pro Circuit event held at Miller Tennis Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

Harutyunyan, representing her native country of Armenia, and Berestetska (pictured right), who represented her home country of the Ukraine, each advanced to the final round of the singles qualifier at the Sargent and Collins, LLP Women's $10,000 Championships. The pair also joined forces in the tournament's doubles qualifier.

In the final round of qualifying singles play, Harutyunyan fell 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 to Nicole Frenkel (USA), who later advanced to the semifinals of the main draw, while Berestetska lost 6-4, 6-2 to Kim Kermet (USA). In the doubles qualifier, the duo dropped a 4-6, 6-4 (12-10) decision to Tristen DeWar and June Lee from the USA.

Harutyunyan, who completed her collegiate eligibility with the Zips in May, is a three-time Mid-American Conference Player of the Year and was named to the all-league team in each of the last four seasons.

Berestetska returns to the squad in 2012-13 as a junior after transferring from Stephen F. Austin prior to the 2011-12 campaign.

Akron has advanced to the NCAA Championships each of the last two seasons as back-to-back MAC Tournament champions.
