MAC Names Women's Tennis Player of the Week (Feb. 20)
CLEVELAND – University of Akron senior tennis player Angelina Jogasuria was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday. She is the first Zip to earn the award this season and today marks the fourth time in her career that she has been so honored.
Last weekend, Jogasuria posted an overall record of 4-0 (2-0 singles, 2-0 doubles) and helped extend the Akron (5-5) win streak to four matches, including a 4-3 victory over East Tennessee State on Friday and 4-3 decision versus 69th-ranked Oregon on Sunday.
When partnered with fellow senior Prang Pantusart, Jogasuria makes up half of the Zips' No. 1 doubles pair that is 9-0 this season and ranked 43rd nationally. Last weekend, the UA duo posted an 8-1 win over ETSU's Lyn Yee Choo and Anna Gerbasi, and an 8-4 decision over Oregon's Patricia Skowronski and Nicole Long.
The Zips' win of the doubles point over the Ducks was pivotal in helping the squad claim its first defeat of a nationally ranked foe since February 2012, and Jogasuria's three-set, last-match-on-court 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over Skowronski clinched match point in dramatic fashion and ended UO's eight-match win streak. Skowronski is ranked 101st nationally in singles.
On Friday, Jogasuria won 7-6 (3), 6-4 against ESTU's Guilia Andreazza at No. 1 singles.
Jogasuria's previous player-of-the-week awards came for the periods ending on Jan. 28, 2010; April 21, 2010 and Feb. 23, 2011. Her other career honors include being named First-Team All-MAC and MAC Freshman of the Year in 2010.
Akron takes to the road this weekend, competing against Wagner College on Friday at 1 p.m. ET, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) on Saturday at 1 p.m., and Columbia on Sunday at 11 a.m.
