Tennis Starts MAC Play with Shutout of NIU, Tops Oakland on Friday

AKRON, Ohio
– The University of Akron women's tennis team improved its win streak to three matches by sweeping a doubleheader on Friday at LaTuchie Tennis Center. The Zips opened the Mid-American Conference portion of their season with a 7-0 win over Northern Illinois in the afternoon, then defeated non-league opponent Oakland 6-1 at night to improve to 10-6 overall and 1-0 against the MAC.

Versus Northern Illinois (14-3, 0-1 MAC), UA won at all three doubles positions and claimed five of the six singles points in straight sets. Angelina Jogasuria kept the shutout intact with 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3), 1-0 (2) win at No. 1 singles.

Against Oakland (2-9), the Zips again swept the doubles courts and posted a victory in five of the six singles flights. The Grizzlies earned their point with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win at No. 6 by Juliana Guevara over Andrea Duva. Play at No. 3 singles was close, where UA's Angelika Jogasuria won 7-6 (3), 7-6 (6) over Tamara Blum. The Zips faced little resistance at the other four singles spots, allowing their opponent to win no more than three games in any set.

Akron plays host to a non-league match against Cleveland State on Saturday at 5 p.m. at LaTuchie Tennis Center.

Zips Notebook: Akron has won three straight and nine of its last 10 matches ... Prang Pantusart posted her second-straight singles win ... after playing at No. 2 singles against Northern Illinois, Pantusart lined up at No. 1 versus Oakland and improved to 2-1 this season when playing at that spot ... Ksenia Berestetska has won three straight and 10 of her last 11 singles contests ... UA switched up its doubles lineup and broke up its nationally-ranked pair of Prang Pantusart and Angelina Jogasuria (ranked 71st) ... Pantusart teamed with Olga Shkundina and Jogasuria with Madison Cohen today ... UA posted its fifth-straight win over NIU ... today's victory against the Huskies was the Zips' second shutout this season (Wagner on Feb. 22) ... Akron is now 4-0 all-time when facing Oakland.
